Getting there

Getting to South West Sydney, and getting around

South West Sydney is easy to reach by train from the city and the airport, and by motorway from the rest of New South Wales. A car helps for the countryside, but trains cover the main centres.

By air

Sydney Airport (SYD) is the main gateway, about 30–40 minutes’ drive from Liverpool depending on traffic. T8 trains run direct from the airport’s domestic and international stations to Glenfield, Campbelltown and Macarthur, but an extra station access fee applies at the airport stations.

Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport at Badgerys Creek, in the south-west itself, is due to open to passengers in late 2026. Check which airlines fly there, and the transport links, before you book.

By train

Sydney Trains run from the city to Liverpool, Cabramatta, Glenfield and Campbelltown, taking about 45 minutes to an hour. Intercity trains continue south from Campbelltown to Picton and the Southern Highlands. You can pay with an Opal card or tap on and off with a contactless bank card or phone.

The M5 runs from the city and the airport to Liverpool and Campbelltown, and the M7 links Liverpool with the north-west. Both are toll roads. The Hume Motorway (M31) continues south from Campbelltown towards the Southern Highlands and Canberra.

Getting around

  • By train: the easiest way between Liverpool, Cabramatta and Campbelltown, and into the city.
  • By bus: buses link the stations with Camden and other suburbs, though some routes are infrequent.
  • By car: the best way to reach Camden, the botanic garden, Thirlmere, Warragamba and the national parks. Avoid the motorways at peak hours if you can.
  • By bike: shared paths run through the Western Sydney Parklands and around Chipping Norton Lakes.
